A Legacy of Musical Excellence

Born in a family of rich musical tradition, Durgaprasad, right from his childhood showed signs of interest in music. His initial musical training was given by his father, the late Shri Allam Koteswara Rao, a renowned Gottuvadyam exponent.

Later, he was put under the tutelage of Kalasikhamani, the late Shri A. Narayana Iyer. By his earnestness, dedication and devotion to this fine art, he lost no time in studying the intricacies of handling this instrument and very soon climbed up the ladder of excellence.

He got well trained in Carnatic Vocal music by the great Sandhyavandanam Srinivasarao. He did a Teachers Training Course in Music and acquired a Masters degree (Vadya Praveena in Gottuvadyam) from Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati. He also completed specialised sound engineering training under the mentorship of Mr. Chandrashekar — a sound engineer, guitarist, and keyboard artist in maestro Ilaiyaraaja's team.

A "Top Rank" artist in All India Radio, he has performed at various prestigious Sabhas, organizations and Music festivals all over the country and abroad. He has performed during Radio Sangeeth Sammelans, National Programmes of Doordarshan & All India Radio, and private television channels.

He has had the fortune of playing with Mridangam stalwarts including Karaikudi R. Mani, Vellore Ramabadran, and Yella Venkateswara Rao. He has performed in multiple Vadya Vrinda ensembles alongside eminent vidwans — Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan, Veena S. Balachander, Lalgudi Jayaraman, T. V. Gopalakrishnan, and L. Gottuvadyam
(Chitra Veena)

According to the ancient classification of Indian string instruments, Gottuvadyam is a type of veena. Though both have resemblance, Gottuvadyam (Chitra Veena) is unfretted, whereas the Veena is fretted — making it uniquely expressive and challenging to master.

While the Veena has seven strings, Gottuvadyam has nine main strings and twelve sympathetic strings, enabling a richer tonal palette and extraordinary depth of expression. A very few musicians are gifted to handle this rare instrument with ease. Sri Durgaprasad is one among them.

Gottuvadyam is the original, traditional name of this instrument, rooted in its playing technique — 'gottu' refers to the cylindrical slide used to produce its distinctive sound. In the latter half of the 20th century, musicologists renamed Gottuvadyam to Chitra Veena to give it a more dignified classical identity — drawing a parallel with the well-known Veena family of instruments.

Athi Chitra Veena

Sri Durgaprasad is not only traditional but also innovative. After years of extensive research, he made changes to the instrument's design for better resonance, portability, and tonal quality, naming it "Athi Chitra Veena" — the only one of its kind, handled by him alone.

The instrument gives full scope for artists to play with ease, giving good sustenance, depth and melody, and the ability to play glides effortlessly.
